I Smell A Cheat!
YES, it IS still plagiarism!
If you guys had checked out my Twitter and Facebook earlier this week, then you'd know that there was an 'incident' that was on everyone's feeds.
What happened?
A Bruneian blogger was caught plagiarising to win a Skin79 Brunei contest!
This was how I found out.
- When : 16th December, Thursday.
- Where : Twitter
- Doing what : Happily browsing the #Brunei feeds, finding stuff to retweet.
Then....
'Oh my, I wonder who it is," I thought. Of course, I had to click on the link to check out what it's about.
It lead to a Singaporean blogger's (Dblchin) blog, where she posted about how a Bruneian blogger had copied some of her content. Then I saw the screenshot of Skin79 Brunei's Facebook where the third winner of the recent blog post contest was announced.
I thought,"NO WAY!!!"
Not only did Cupidbabe87 stole her pictures, she also copied sentences and replaced some words to make it less obvious. Well, girl, you didn't do it well enough because you still got caught!
After this news got out, Cupidbabe immediately privatised her blog. So, now we can't access it anymore. Darn it!
You can read about what exactly she copied at Dblchin's blog post, where, luckily, she managed to screen-capture some portions of the blog before it got privatised.
Then, I remembered that she had inboxed me before. So I quickly went to my Facebook to take another look.
Yes, she deactivated her Facebook too.
As you can see, it was just a few days after the winners were announced. She inboxed me because I was one of the winners too (Thanks Skin79 Brunei!).
I remembered thinking why was this girl so impatient. Well, NOW, I know why!
Apparently, she wasn't very polite either when she picked up her third place winner B$50 voucher. She literally walked off after the voucher was put into her hands. That's right, no 'Thank you's.
Oh, and I saw this in the Comments section of Dblchin's blog post too.
So, she's done it before.
Nice, isn't she?
Looks like someone else had the misfortune of encountering one of Cupidbabe87's 'mischief' before. I wonder how many times she has stole people's pictures? *Tsk tsk*
Plagiarism
Copying someone else's work and passing it as your own is bad. Copying and submitting the article/post to win a contest is despicable!
I don't really like to touch on negative subjects, but this one, I can't let go.
I find the act insulting because those who participated in the contest had put in effort to come up with original posts. The other bloggers actually bought the products, tried them, took the time to take their own pictures and write up a post.
If you do want to use others' pictures, ask the owners for permission. Most would allow as long as you credit the pictures to them.
For example, I thought I might use some of Dblchin's photos in this post, all I had to do was ask. She called me 'sweetie' some more!
I ended up not using any of her pictures, since you might as well read the story and see the pictures from her blog.
So, that's my piece of mind on the matter. Share this with anyone you know who's a blogger, because we all can learn from this.
And to 'Cupidbabe87', I hope you learnt your lesson. But somehow, I don't think you even regret what you did.
Hmm, maybe I'll get a 'pakkkkk u!!!!' comment for this blog post too. LOL!
Til the next post, dearies!
Plagiarism on the internet is not only the mere copying of text, but also the presentation of another's ideas as one's own, regardless of the specific words or constructs used to express that idea.

Technically, if you copy and paste and still give a link back to its source, is not plagiarism. That's just lazy. Copy and paste only is plagiarism. Copy and paste with edits to hide where its sourced from is true creativity. Copy but not pasted anywhere online is called reference. LOL. I've spent too much online to know some of these Internet rules. :S

This is the first time I've heard of this issue. Oh my..... I've been so outdated for so long! Haven't been on twitter, and this is what happened! Missing out so much. LoL!
But yeah, I'm not a fan of plagiarism either. But I'm not a fan of arrogance either. One time, I added a picture to an album that I find inspiring or pretty. I credited the person, but she was like "excuse me... normally i wouldn't do much..blablabla....you're not claiming it as your own..but PLEASE! ask me before posting it!"
Wasn't a really pleasant experience, but oh well. -

Hiya BD!
Interesting input you have there. Copy and paste with edits is creativity, well that true. but that doesn't make it right. Imagine if you come up with an article that took you a lot effort through research. And someone just take the results that you painstakingly obtained without crediting you. I'm sure you won't be happy with that. :)
Amy, Where have you been girl???
Yikes, sorry to hear that something like that happened to you. some people are just sensitive about i guess. And they don't realise that you crediting them in your album, means that they will get more viewers!
I am all fine with people taking my picture or posts IF they credit and link it back to me. More viewers for me right??? hehehe. -

Awesome post! Plagiarism should not be tolerated.

Yeah I know that if we copy and paste with edits is not right. That's why we've got to cleverly disguise them as much as we can to show that it has little left of its actual copy and more of its creator's creativity and originality.
It's a great debate of whether we should use the materials provided to us. So here's something to look at, http://articles.sitepoint.com/article/copy-great-designers-steal -

Hiya Shely! Thanks babe! :) That's right, plagiarism cannot be taken lightly because if left alone, it could lead to even more. Please RT and share this yeah? :)
BD: what are you doing man?? Educating ppl how to get away with plagiarism??? Hehehe. I think if we're getting material from other sources, we should reference it. It's just like all those essays we do in school or college. We were taught to reference the information. :) -

Interesting read on the link BD, hehe and yeah Orchid Row dearest, Plagiarism and what BD was trying to say are two different meaning on the subject itself. Ofcourse we all wouldn't want people to copy our idea and benefit from it, like for instance being in a competition and your rival copied your idea for something and redacted it to make it more resourceful and more interesting than yours and won the competition instead of the originality of the piece that you created is somewhat a judge would call a battle of the fittest.
But, if your rival copied the originality of your content 1:1, claiming it was hers/his and won instead of you, than that my dear is truly plagiarism such as the one mentioned on your article above.
If plagiarism is understood in a wrong way than Samsung would've been out of buisness for their product of an iPhone and iPad look alike but entirely different on OS and hardware secifications →http://blog.etech.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Android-Tablet-Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-P1000-Review-2.jpg
I'm not trying to debate or anything :) just making a point of what BD meant on his comment about the difference on Plagiarism and Innovation to avoid confusion. Innovation can therefore be seen as the process that renews something that exists and not, as is commonly assumed, the introduction of something new.
Love the article though :) keep up the good work Hun.

Hi infiniteloop! Thanks for the input! :) oh yes, I definitely agree that it's that innovation and plagiarism is 2 entirely different thing. If we use BB creams into the context, then Etude House, Faceshop and Skin79 will be like what your Samsung/Apple situation. :)
My focus here is on plagiarism. From comments on my FB, some people are unaware of the term and what it is. So thanks for the additional info dude! It'll be valuable to people reading this. Hehe
