Style Tips For Mums-To-Be

Who says mums-to-be can't be fashionistas too?

For mothers-to-be out there, dressing themselves could prove to be a challenge. Finding clothes to accomodate your expanding waistline is a hard enough task. What more to stay stylish while that baby bump grows bigger?

I may not have had a child yet, but I hear woes from dear friends of mine, who not only wants to look after their growing sweethearts, but also look good throughout their pregnancy too.

Just because you have a bun in the oven doesn't mean that you can't be fashionable as well. But before you go splurging on maternity wear, go through your wardrobe first as you would probably have some pieces that would do for your first few months of pregnancy.

Here are a few tips on what types of clothing you should wear to flatter a pregnant body.

Empire line - Gwen Stefani

Empire Waist

Empire-line dresses or tops works best for a pregnant woman. No need to go for huge and shapeless attire, which just makes you look like a tent. Empire-line outfits cinches just under the bosom and free flows down. The shape provides a flattering silhouette and can accomodate any stages of pregnancy body types.

Gwen Stefani is one of my favourite fashion icons and she proves that she can be also be fashionable while being pregnant.

Scoop Neck - Cate Blanchett

Necklines

With ever-growing breasts, you need to choose what kind of necklines are the most flattering. Scoop necks, thick-strap tops and V-necks are the way to go to show a little skin for a sexy look. Be careful of selecting too low of a cut for the neckline.

Cate Blanchett looks gorgeous in her front-draped dress with a semi-low dipped neckline.

Single Colour - Jessica Alba

Single Colour-Block

Go for a sophisticated look with a single colour block outfit rather than busy prints.  However, if you want to have a little more variety, try and keep it within the same colour family. For example, shades of grey and blue go well together. It would streamline your figure and make you appear slimmer and taller.

Maternity Jeans

Maternity Jeans

An essential piece in your maternity attire. Maternity jeans has an elastic band that expands to gently support your growing baby bump. They should be relatively boot-cut to balance out your heavier upper body.

There are even skinny-style jeans available for pregnant women like this one here as worn by Rebecca Gayheart. Contrary to the name, skinny jeans are not only for skinny people.

Soft and Flowing Material - Angelina Jolie

Soft and Flowing Fabric

Choose soft draping material for a dress or top as they define your body shape, and looks pretty and feminine. For a dress or skirt, look for material that has plenty of swing to them. For a blouse, make sure that the drapes begin under your bustline and finishes at the hips or beyond.

Angelina Jolie had worn mostly drapes during her pregnancies, just like this one, and never fails to look soft and beautiful in the dresses she had worn.

Through researching on maternity clothing, my perception towards maternity fashion has evolved. I never realised how difficult it is to  carry forward style into pregnancy but I do know now that it is more than possible.

Being a mother is part of being a woman, and all women have a right to be able to look good at whatever stages of their lives.

So, a special shout-out to all the mothers-to-be!

xoxo
